INTERNeX Canada: Expose of the week

This week we had the pleasure of interviewing Cristiane, a lovely German girl who is doing her internship in Vancouver. She comes from Dusseldorf and she has been in Canada for 2 months and she will stay for another two more. Her workplace is located in the representative Woodwars Building!

Why did you choose Canada?

I choose to come to Canada, because a bunch of friends of mine had been before and all of them were absolutely in love with this country, so I thought “If it is so nice, I have to see for myself”.

What kind of internship are you doing?

I am an intern in a non-profit organization, a community economic development charity which helps people to develop productive futures and build sustainable communities.

Is your internship useful?

Absolutely, I had to do a three-month internship in order to be able to continue with my studies and doing it here gives me the opportunity of gaining international experience and continue practicing English at the same time that I develop task related with my degree.

What kind of task are you responsible for on a daily basis?

I usually work in the social media marketing and the advertising, office work like receiving people, answering the phone… And what I like the most is helping with the charity golf tournament which is a fundraising event. This money will be used to help people giving them the opportunity of reinsertion into society after drug abuse or another problem.

What do you like most about Canada and Vancouver?

I love the open-minded and friendly people and this city has plenty of them. Vancouver also has a lot of different things to offer, is a big city, with mountains, sea…

What trips did you do in your free time, also organized by INTERNeX?

I visited Whistler and Victoria and did other several short trips like Grouse Mountain, False Creek, Capilano… and of course I will visit The Rockies!

Do you attend the weekly Pub-Night organized by INTERNeX and do you think this is a good way to meet new people?

I attend whenever I can and I find it a really good way to meet new people and to avoid homesickness. It is great to be with people that are in the same situation as you are.

What´s the best thing about INTERNeX International Exchange?

Thanks to INTERNeX I found my internship. Actually the PR Team is the best thing! They are an excellent connection between the candidates and the organization, you always have someone to talk to.

Would you recommend INTERNeX?

Yes, it is a relief to have someone to support you, in whom you can trust if there is a problem. The social events help to meet people so you are not alone in the new country.

Thank you Cristiane for the interview!

Cheers,

Irene

INTERNeX Canada: Expose of the week

This week’s expose of the week is about David. He is 25 years old and from Germany. He originally came to Vancouver to improve his English and in the 6 months he has been here he has improved it a lot. During these 6 months he was also an intern at a construction company to gain more practical experience in the world of civil engineering. Additionally, David is also the house manager at the INTERNeX staffhouse on 34th avenue. Unfortunately, David will be leaving us soon so I sat down with him to talk about his experience here in Vancouver and with INTERNeX.

Was your internship useful?

Yes it was very useful. I had the chance to work at the office and at the construction sites. Working there was very fun, the colleagues were friendly and welcoming and there was not a lot of pressure on me which was comforting. I was given the opportunity to take a close look at several blueprints and compare them to others and eventually realize them. I also learnt a lot about the different things that can go wrong within this kind of industry and I learnt how to deal with the problems in an effective way.

What kind of tasks were you responsible for on a daily basis?

I was given quite a lot of responsibility. The more experience I gained the more I could take on. Eventually they let be in command of a group of construction workers, it was very educational.

What was the best thing about your internship?

The best thing about my internship was definitely the colleagues. They were so nice to me and treated me as if I was like a member of their family. One of my most memorable experiences was when we hired a limo for the night; that was great. On my last day they made a speech on my behalf; that was a nice way to end things.

What do you like most about Canada and Vancouver?

I really love the landscape and the nature; there’s the Rocky’s and Whistler. You can also see dolphins, raccoons and whales. It is also amazing how there’s the combination of beaches, big city and mountains; I don’t think there’s anything else like it in the world.

What trips did you do in your free time that were organised by INTERNeX?

I attended the rafting trip, the trip to the Rocky Mountains and the Halloween party. All trips and events were great fun.

Did you attend the weekly pub nights organized by INTERNeX? Do you think this was a good way to meet new people?

Yes, I’ve attended most pub nights. When I first arrived it was definitely a great way to meet new people. It’s also a nice thing to do in the middle of the week because it gives you a chance to socialise with others after work.

Why did you choose INTERNeX International Exchange to help you with your experience?

I chose INTERNeX because it offered an easy way for me to organize a job and a place to live and also created a lot more opportunities to meet new people. They also ensured that I would feel welcome on my first day in a country that I wasn’t familiar with.

What’s the best thing about INTERNeX International Exchange?

As well as it making things a lot easier for me, I also really liked the fact that they offered me the house manager position at the staffhouse. I was given a discount on my rent and I learnt more responsibility since I had to be in charge of a large group of people. I also gained more confidence from this.

How did you find a place to stay?

I received an email from INTERNeX telling me about the staffhouse and I decided to take their offer for the room they had available for me. I really like the staffhouse; I’ve always had really nice roommates and it’s great that there are so many people living there.

Would you recommend INTERNeX International Exchange to other potential candidates?

Yes I would. They always give a very fun and welcoming first day; they help you out a lot and it’s the best way to meet a lot of new friends.

INTERNeX hopes you enjoy your last few days here in Vancouver and we wish you all the best for the future!

Cheers,

Your PR Team

Expose of the Week

Hi everyone,

This week Janina is the Expose of the Week! Upcoming Saturday Janina is going back to Germany after 9 weeks living in the INTERNeX Staffhouse and doing an internship here in Vancouver! Today I visited the office of Janina in a chocolate factory. It was great to see her so enthusiastic about the company. I even got a tour through the chocolate factory!

Where are you from?
I am from Freiburg in Germany, but I study in Villingen-Schwenningen.

Why are you in Canada?
I am here in Canada to do an internship for my study. I study Business Administration- management in industries, for this study I can combine work with study. Every three months I change from work to study. The company where I work for gave me the change to do an internship abroad.

Why did you choose Canada?
It happened by change. I wanted to go to Australia but my university works together with INERNeX. It was a last minute decision for me to go abroad, so therefore was easier to go to Canada!

What do you like most about Vancouver?
Vancouver has everything! Beaches, the sea, and mountains! Furthermore the people here are very friendly!

How did you find INTERNeX International Exchange?
My University

How did you like your internship?
I like it a lot, because the internship is really related to my study. Furthermore I am working on my own project, which means responsibility. The team is very nice! My colleagues helped me very well in the beginning, and if I have any questions they are always willing to help me.

What kind of tasks are you responsible for on daily basis?
I am working in the purchasing department, this means that I am in contact with the suppliers, I am responsible for creating purchasing orders, setting up new item codes, getting quotes from suppliers. Furthermore I helped the quality department, the most important was to taste the chocolate. Another task was to assist the production-supervisor with the new employees. I showed the new employees around and I did the administration.

Is it related to the study you are doing back home?
Yes this is really related to my study, because I got the change to work in a manufacturing company.

Where have you been in and around Vancouver?
I have been to nearly all the beaches and parks in Vancouver. I especially like Stanley Park. I also went to Whistler, where I did horseback riding and the peak to peak gondola. Furthermore I went to Seattle for shopping and sightseeing, rafting in the Chilliwack River, and I went to the light house park in North Vancouver.

What is the most memorable thing you did in Canada?
Rafting! It was really amazing! It is an activity which I cannot do at home. At the beginning we were very scary, but at the end it was a lot of fun. We even jumped from a cliff! It was an awesome experience!

What is the first thing you will do when you return back home?
I will see my boyfriend again. He is picking me up from the airport! And I will go to the supermarket and buy all the things that I cannot buy/ or are very expensive here in Vancouver, such as cheese and bread. And I can enjoy my own apartment again!

What was the best thing about your Internship/your stay in Canada?
That I can eat a lot of chocolate during my internship J. And I liked it that I met a lot of people from different countries in the Staffhouse!

What was the worst thing about your Internship/stay in Canada?
The first time that I was crossed East Hastings. I regretted it immediately that I did not listen to what INTERNeX told me, namely try to not cross East Hastings.
And I also do not like to wait for bus number 10! Haha sometimes I have to wait for more than 40 minutes and if the bus is there are 3 or even more busses number 10 in a row!

Would you recommend INTERNeX International Exchange?
Yes I would recommend INTERNeX, because I really got an internship that I wanted to have

Janina, thank you very much for being the ‘Expose of the Week’  I hope you will enjoy your last days in Vancouver! And I wish you good flight back home!

Cheers, Lydia
