INTERNeX Canada: Casual Friday!

I have been writing this post for a while and I have to be sincere I didn´t know what to write about this time, so I just started to read the title again and again… Casual Friday, casual?  And then a lot of things come to mind…

Do you believe in the coincidences? In the destiny? Or in the casual things?

Googling a little bit around this topic it´s crazy all the information and coincidences that you can find in it. Even it exist a classification around coincidences!! Reading more there are more than one history that wow, it´s incredible, almost seem a film.

Here are two of the most interesting I found:

In 1900, King Umberto I of Italy was dining in a restaurant whose owner was born on the same day and city that the monarch and they were both really similar physically. They were married the same day with a woman of the same name. The restaurant owner had opened the establishment on the same day that Umberto I of Italy was crowned king. Everything was such a coincidence that the king invited the owner to an athletic championship with him the next day. Unfortunately that moment never happened. The owner was shot, and in the same instant that they were telling the king about what has happened, the anarchist Bresci shot and killed the King.

Another terrifying coincidence is around the lives of two famous American presidents: Lincoln and Kennedy. Abraham Lincoln and John F. Kennedy were appointed Congress in 1847 and 1947 respectively. Lincoln was elected president in 1860, just one hundred years later in 1960 Kennedy was elected president. They measured 1.83 meters and their names were seven letters.  Lincoln’s secretary, named Kennedy, and Kennedy´s secretary named Lincoln, advised them not to go to places where they died. They were both killed on Friday by bullets in their heads, shot from behind and in front of their wives. They both were assassinated by southern. Lincoln´s killer was Andrew Johnson who was born on 1808 and Kennedy´s was Lyndon Johnson and was born in 1908.

And this is the moment of stop! Because Wow. That´s is totally crazy!!!!!!!!!!Oh my god!

I was just trying to make a philosophical post but right now I am kind of scared…what would  happen if the coincidences are not coincidences and the casual is not casual anymore? What would happen if we are just part of something really big that we can´t control?

I just prefer not to think too much, just enjoy the casual or not-casual-but-seem casual circumstances that the life offers!

So read this post and then just forget it! FORGET IT!

Have a super nice Casual Friday!

Cheers,

Irene

Head down under – Head to New Zealand!

The world we live in is a large and beautiful place. There are approximately 195 countries on earth, all offering different landscapes, cultures and languages. So, have you been exploring yet?  Maybe you’ve only been thinking about traveling, or maybe you’re currently planning your next move. But, if you’re searching for a destination where the landscape is green and the mountains soar as high as your dreams – you’re searching for New Zealand.

New Zealand’s spectacularly beautiful landscape includes vast mountain chains, steaming volcanoes, sweeping coastlines, deeply indented fiords and lush rainforests. Comparable in size and shape to Great Britain, Colorado or Japan, New Zealand has a population of only 4 million – making it one of the world’s least crowded countries. It is a haven for those seeking peace, rejuvenation and relaxation as well as a playground for thrill seekers and adventurers. A temperate climate with relatively small seasonal variation makes it an ideal year-round holiday destination.

Start planning now and you could be on your way to New Zealand in time for the 2011 Rugby World Cup – the premier international rugby union competition. Canada, Australia, England, South Africa, USA, France, Scotland, Ireland, Italy, Samoa, Fiji, and Tonga are just a few of the competing countries! This is the third largest sporting event in the world, behind the Olympics and the Soccer World Cup.

Candidate Exposé

For the past month, I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know Simone. She flew in from the Netherlands and came to explore Canada on October 15, 2009. I’ve gotten the chance to hang out and party with Simone while living at the INTERNeX staff house, and she is so full of character! It’s evident in her laugh that she’s been having a blast in Vancouver, and she recently got to show her family around town too while they came for a visit!

Why did you decide to come to Canada?
Well, it was really hard to get a visa for the United States. Vancouver was the next closest thing and the Olympics were going to be held there so that’s what helped me make my decision.

How did you find out about INTERNeX?
I found out about INTERNeX through a dutch organization called Travel Active.

What program are you currently participating in?
I am in the Hospitality program doing a city placement at Blenz.

What do you enjoy about your job?
I love working with other international people, some of which are my roommates and housemates.

What skills do you use at work?
I have to multi-task and have great social skills.

What would you tell others about Canada as a country?
It is beautiful – a lot like Europe. People are really nice here… almost too nice!

Can you sum up your experience in Canada?
It is an awesome time to get to know life and more about myself.

What kind of activities have you done since living in Canada?
I’ve seen a lot of nature, been to the Rockies, and visited lots of areas within Vancouver such as Granville Island, Metrotown and many different beaches!

What are your plans for the future?
I plan to travel more all over the world, and maybe come back to Canada to work on a farm. Eventually though I would like to settle down back at home in the Netherlands.

Café Crêpe

I think I’m in love. With crêpes. This weekend, I went for another stroll down Robson Street, however I didn’t get very far. The sweet, sweet aroma of chocolate drizzle, strawberry and nutella made me stop dead in my tracks. Could it be? Love at first bite…

I had always seen the red lights that hovered above this little restaurant on Robson street, but had never stopped to order anything. Usually I eat lunch before heading out for some shopping, but on Saturday all I could think about was food! As soon as the smell of melting chocolate and fresh cut strawberries reached my nostrils, I was running towards the express window at Café Crêpe.

Importing the tradition of the classic European café to North America, Café Crêpe specializes in Parisian sweet & savoury crêpes. There are so many different types of crêpes to try at this hub, it can drive a hungry person mad! In addition to crêpes, they also specialize in french baguette sandwiches, and grilled Italian panini.  As an international café, Café Crêpe also offers world classics like half-pound certified Angus burgers, pommes frites (french fries),thin crust pizza, and a full traditional breakfast menu that includes Eggs Benedict and an exciting variety of omelettes, among other specialties. In addition to serving exceptional Italian roasted coffee, Café Crêpe is fully licensed, offering a vast selection of alcoholic beverages and cocktails, along with select beers and wines.

Everyone NEEDS to try something from this restaurant. Although a little pricey (depending on what you order), you will not be let down! I still dream about this crêpe.

Enjoy your eats!

Last Night’s INTERNeX PuB NiGHT

Last night was a great time at the Calling! A bunch of us met up around 7 p.m. for Trivia night, a weekly event they host. The bar was packed and everyone got into groups to participate in the trivia game.

They asked a variety of questions, including general knowledge, music trivia and television trivia. We had fun trying to answer the questions but there were some other groups that clearly ate their wheaties that morning. If you’re looking for a fun night then Wednesday’s at the Calling isn’t a bad place to try out!  You can win free pitchers of beer and other prizes for winning trivia rounds with your group.

Around 11 p.m. we headed over to English Bay and had fun at the beach, the temperature was pretty mild last night! I had a great time meeting new people and I’m look forward to seeing everyone out again in 2 weeks!

It was a little busy last night, so I think on May 26th we’re going to try out a different bar, maybe even a club! Stay tuned for more details on that! Check out some of the pictures from last night!

Cheers,

Laura
