INTERNeX Canada: News/Fun facts – My top 3 in Vancouver!

So my last weekend in Canada has finally arrived.. Therefore I want to write and share my top 3 things to do in Vancouver!!

#1 – Rent/Ride a bike!
Really the coolest way to see this amazing city is by bike. The last 14 weeks I rode over 1000km through the city of Vancouver! The best way to rent bikes is around Stanley Park (Denman/Robson St.) There are lot’s of renting facilities around this street. Normal prices are between 30-40 dollar for one whole day and 20-30 for half a day. Below you can find some companies that I recommend:

The best thing to do is make a tour in and around Stanley Park. You can take the easy seawall to make a round (12km). If you have more time bike the Lion’s Gate Bridge as well!

Last Friday, my very last day riding my bike to the office, I discovered a flat tire! How peculiar? 😉

#2 – Go by ferry to Granville Island MAP
This spot is one of my favorites! The island is easy-going with lot’s of special food and other things to buy. They have an enormous market with more local products then you can imagine! The best way to get there is with the False Creek Ferries! These small boats are sailing all over False Creek. The oneway fee is between $3-5 dollar.. But for this price you get a great view of the harbor, boats and the Yaletown skyline!

#3 – Visit Gastown and all his pubs!
A awesome place for me during my stay in Canada! Because the office is in the middle of Gastown, it was not that hard for me to discover this place.. I was really surprised by the Irish and British culture influence in this area. Most of the pubs and bars are built in this style. Maybe that’s the reason that I like this place so much!

The places I like and recommend in Gastown are: LampLighter Public House, The Black Frog, The Blarney Stone & The Steamclock.

INTERNeX Canada: Grouse Mountain records!

Good afternoon everybody, how is your week going so far? The weather isn’t that good as it was last week right now but perfect for a long working day I guess.

I live in a homestay close to Rupert Park where you have a perfect view of all the surrounding mountains. So last week, I asked my homestay family about climbing those mountains. There must be some awesome views of downtown Vancouver..

They told me that the Grouse Mountain can be seen as a challenge for the Canadian people living around Vancouver. From the base to the top it’s around 1,5 hour climbing for a normal fit person (Grouse Grind Hike). However, most Canadian people want to make it a more challenging thing. Every year they want to break there own record going to the top. You can even buy a card that will record your time to the top! But for us as students, the time of the walk to the top doesn’t matter that much..

When you are on the summit of Grouse Mountain (1127 meter) you have some beautiful views of the city of Vancouver. On clear days you can see as far as the border with the United States! In other words, it’s defiantly worth the climb guys. And if you are tired of the walk you can choose to take the tram back down. But if you want it cheap trust only on your feet. 😉

So the next time when the weather is clear and good again, grab your walking shoes and prepare yourself for a good workout!

INTERNeX Canada: Top Canadian Google Searches of 2012

Google is probably the place I go to when I need an answer for anything. In this day and age, we don’t go to the doctors anymore when we are sick or open an actual dictionary to look up the meaning of a word. If there’s something we don’t understand? We turn on our laptop or our iPhone and Google has the answer.

Recently, Google Canada revealed what the most popular Canadian searches of 2012 were and you might find some answers rather surprising or not! It’s kind of cool to see what kind of things, news or people were searched by Canadians in this year!

The Top Trending searches (new searches with the highest amount of traffic) of the year was Pinterest, which is a photo sharing social media website, with Hurricane Sandy and the London Olympics to follow.

Our very own Prime Minister, Stephen Harper was the most searched Canadian Politician, as he should be and is followed by Justin Trudeau, who is a candidate for the leadership of the Liberal Party and the son of Pierre Trudeau, the late former Prime Minister of Canada.

Not surprisingly, the top most searched Canadian Musician, remains to be Justin Bieber with Carly Rae Jepsen following in third place. She has been well-known in Canada for quite some time after placing third in the television show “Canadian Idol” in 2007, but she only became famous outside of Canada after Justin tweeted about her earlier this year!

The Vancouver Canucks was the third most searched Canadian Sports Teams and Vancouver, itself, was the fourth most searched Cities in Google Maps.

The Canadian beer Molson remains the most searched Beer and the most searched Canadian Foods were bacon, poutine and maple syrup. Very typical, right?

What I found most interesting was that people, even on the internet, are simply looking for love. The top Trending ‘What Is…?’ is What is Love and second highest Trending ‘How To…?’ is How to Love.

These statistics may seem kind of boring, but it shows the dominant thoughts and influences of the culture in this period of time. Our ways of discovering the “truth” has changed with our advancement in technology and social media. Who knows, maybe Google does have the answer for everything, even if its love!

Grouse Mountain Hike! Part 2

Hi everyone,

Well like Laura said, the hike up Grouse mountain was brutal! But it was so worth it when you reach the top and  see the view. You appreciate it so much more because  it took so much effort getting there! But the hiking up the mountain is not all you can do at Grouse Mountain. There are lots of activities to keep you busy the entire day!

When we got to the top the first thing we did  was take pictures of the beautiful view, and to also take a much needed rest. After grabbing something to eat and sitting in the sun, we went to explore the rest of the mountain. We started walking and soon discovered that there is lots to do.

There was a Lumber Jack show, where they show you how they cut wood and how they climb trees with a band. When we arrived, the show had already started and was almost over. There was this very funny guy, pretending to be stranded on one of the big pole they use to show how to climb a tree. I won’t go in to a lot of details, you just have to go up there yourself, because it was hilarious! The show is hosted three times a day.

There was also a bird viewing show. We got to see some amazing birds up close. There was a bird that was doing it’s third show and did not want to cooperate and flew up an electricity pole. It took a lot of convincing from the trainer to get the bird down again. There was also an eagle and at the time of the show a wild eagle flew over and they started gawking at each other! It was a totally awesome show!

There is also a grizzly bear habitat. Unfortunately we did not see any grizzly bears, but there was a wild black bear walking around.  Because the black bear was walking around they closed the walking path to make sure that everyone left him alone. So we decided to take another walking route! And it was totally worth it!

Have you ever seen snow in June? And I am not talking about a little bit of leftover snow but enough snow to  make a snowman! So we did! Before starting on the hike we asked people who where coming back what they thought of the trail. They said that there was a bit of snow so we decided to walk anyway. But there was a lot more snow than we thought!  I had never seen snow in June before so that made it extra special.

At the end of the day we took the gondola back down. This was the only thing we had to buy that day. So we had an amazing day for only $5.00 (not including transport).

I really recommend everyone to go to Grouse Mountain! I had such a amazing time and I also recommend everyone hiking up the mountain. If you don’t want to hike up the mountain but would still like to enjoy a day at Grouse Mountain for $39. 95 you can go up and down the mountain with the gondola. This ticket also includes a ride on a chairlift, giving an even better view and access to all of the shows and other activities at Grouse Mountain.

Vancouver Ranked Top Canadian City
