INTERNeX CANADA: Smart Saver Vancouver – $1 Tim Hortons!

This is what working in downtown Vancouver does to you, you start drinking and buying coffees, tea or a fancy hot drink because you pass by 10 different coffee shops on the way to work.  I can’t help but give in every time, telling myself that I deserve this little treat.

Over the weekend in Whistler, I learnt that buying a hot drink in a plastic-y, paper cup and then taking it to-go is not all that common in Europe. However, it is clearly a staple, and to some almost ritual-like, in the Canadian culture.

Tim Hortons is the pride and joy of Canadians. Just thinking about the fresh baked donuts, the fast and somewhat healthy hot food and the cheap drinks makes me what to make a stop there after work today!

For a limited time, they are offering 3 of their specialty hot drinks for only $1! You get to choose between Café Mocha, Latte and the Classic French Vanilla in a small size cup. This is available at any Tim Hortons locations in Canada.

It doesn’t say when this awesome deal ends, so hurry up and stop by on your way to work, school or when you need a pick me up in the morning! I would recommend trying the French Vanilla as it is really popular and I really like it. However, I would avoid the latte as I’ve been told it isn’t that great.

Cheers,

Queenie

INTERNeX Canada: Culture Shock – food edition

Enjoying Canada? You probably already discovered a lot of Canadian things to do here. But there is also food that you need to try while you are here, you can’t leave Canada without it! Check out these Canadian treats:

Poutine
This is of course the very first thing to try in Canada! It’s French fries covered with brown gravy and topped with fresh cheese curds. You can also add meat in your poutine. It is best enjoyed at three AM after a long club night and a couple of drinks!

Maple syrup
In Canada you can find ANYTHNG with maple syrup in it. There is maple tea, maple cookies, maple ice cream, maple candies, maple wine, maple butter, maple sugar, even maple soap – the list is endless. It’s best with pancakes or crêpes; add banana pieces and you have the real Canadian breakfast!

Beaver tail
Don’t worry, Canada will not make you eat beaver meat. Beaver tail is a sweet treat: it’s a flat piece of dough that is fried and then covered with different delights like chocolate, maple syrup, cinnamon, sugar, nuts (not all at once, you can choose). The shape of the dough and the chocolate stripes they usually put on top make it look like a beaver tail.

Tim Hortons
Originated in Canada, Tim Hortons is THE Canadian icon. Of course they have donuts everywhere, but try the Maple Dip Donut! Timbits are truly Timmy’s invention, can’t leave Canada without having had a box of Timbits. And have a double double for your drink, just because you feel so local when ordering it…

Oreo
You might know Oreo cookies, they are pretty good. But things made out of Oreo cookies are even better. Start out with a McDonalds Oreo McFlurry; there is a lot of gelato shops with Oreo ice cream, too. Then, there are Oreo cakes out there, the best treat ever! And if you dare, try fried Oreos – a cookie covered with dough, fried and served hot. Sounds odd but it is incredibly tasty as the cookie melts inside!

Nanaimo bars
This one is not only Canadian, it’s even local! It is named after the West-Coast city of Nanaimo on Vancouver Island, BC. The Nanaimo bar is a dessert made of a wafer crumb-based layer, a light vanilla layer or custard flavoured butter icing, and covered in chocolate. What else is there to say?

That’s my list, I tried them all. Or did a forget anything? Do you have more Canadian delights? Comment!

Calling for Chocoholics!

Chocolate Covered Carrots

From October 15 to November 10, 2010, there is a West Coast Chocolate Festival!

Vancouver is known for the good food, especially the festivals that showcase different restaurants or feature a certain kind of food.  In this case, we have the West Coast Chocolate Festival that as the name implies, is solely focused on chocolate!

If you are new to the city, what better way to familiarize yourself by sampling an eclectic and exotic selection of chocolate imported from around the world?

Kick-Starting the Festival

“Panache” kick starts the festival on October 15, taking place in a breath-taking, revolving event space.  Imagine sitting atop most of the city, while indulging in an assortment of rich, luscious chocolate melting onto your tongue.

Chocolate & Tea

For true chocolate lovers, you must want to taste chocolate in all its forms.  Why not try drinking chocolate?

There are chocolate tea menus featuring different kinds of chocolate – hazelnut, dark, mocha.

You might even want to follow the tea with a pairing of chocolate curry chicken sandwich.

Charlie’s Chocolate Factory

Ever watched the movie titled “Charlie’s Chocolate Factory”? If you want to tour the whole production of chocolate, from how it’s made to the final product, you can go on site to witness and sample the creation of this delectable treat.

Chocolate & Movement

To combat the accumulation of calories, there is the very unique pairing of chocolate and movement.

For example, you can partake in a Chocolate Yoga event or a Chocolate Meditation.  What these activities teach you is the enjoyment of chocolate in a mindful state, enjoying every morsel with intent.

I’m sure this month of chocolate featured events will leave you falling in love with Vancouver!

Keep checking out our website for the latest updates of events and features in Vancouver!

CHEERIOS,
