215 days of action

215 days. That sounds like a long time. But I can tell you – my past 215 days passed by incredibly fast! Now, it is time to say goodbye to INTERNeX, Vancouver and of course, to you!

“Welcome to INTERNeX Canada!” How often did I hear this voice of our lovely orientation video? Many, many times! When I got to see the video for the first time in January, I did not know what kind of adventure was awaiting me. Every time I have seen the video from then on, I have met new people from all over the world. Some, I only saw once, but with others, I have spent so much time together. I am happy that I can call a whole bunch of them my friends now.

215 days – and I spent not one of them entirely at home. There was always something received_1908032345904902going on. At least one INTERNeX event per weekend and a long bucket list kept me busy. Skiing in winter was an absolute highlight for me. It’s awesome to leave the house in the morning in skiing clothes and just take a bus to the local mountains! Kelowna, Mount Seymour, Cypress Mountain, Whistler – all beautiful destinations to hit the slope. I am glad that I always had a cool crew with me who made these days even more fun.

IMG-20180526-WA0023.jpgBut also when the snow had already melted, I spent much time outside. Hiking, biking, kayaking, ziplining, surfing… BC offers many great opportunities to do so and I enjoyed exploring pretty parks, beaches and lakes. I also loved to spend time in the city and to scratch the typical tourist attractions from my bucket list. The weekly INTERNeX events were always a fun way to spend the weekend and discover Vancouver together.

However, Wednesday became my favourite day of the week. Chats, drinks, bingo and karaoke – I loved meeting the gang with old and new members every Wednesday night. Not only during the week, but also in the weekends there has always been a reason to go for ‘a pint’ and discover Vancouver by night.

As part of the PR-gang, I was also responsible for organizing a couple of weekend trips for you. “Back to nature” was the motto of both of my trips. The first one brought us to Salt Spring Island in March, where we spent the weekend in a huge house in the middle of nowhere. I will not forget all the laughs we had in the cozy outdoor hot tub where we squeezed in 14 people and our cider tasting in a beautiful scenery.

The other island trip just happened in July – our adventure on Vargas Island. What a IMG_20180719_105346_752journey! Struggling with lighting up the campfire, looking up into the beautiful sky full of stars, eating loads of schnäcks, cheering for everyone who was able to stand on the surfboard for a second – these are memories I will take home with me. I hope you guys are going to wear your Schnäckqueen/king shirts with pride. And don’t forget: no matter what, we will always have Vargas!

During the past 215 days, I have learned a lot: about the polite Canadians and how they say ‘thank you’ when leaving the bus; the rules of hockey and of many international card games; the three different words you can use to order a beer in Swedish; how to dance to country songs and so much more. And of course, I have learned the most important rule as a future leisure manager: Expect the unexpected!

In- and outside the office, I enjoyed the past months to the fullest. I am very glad that I had the chance to experience my Canadian adventure with the people I met here. It would not have been the same without YOU! A huge thanks also to the INTERNeX team who made me feel welcome from day one. That was easy!

The first reunions are already planned and I am excited to meet you again somewhere in the Netherlands, Belgium, the UK, Sweden, Finland, Germany, Brazil or maybe even back in Vancouver. Until then, make the most out of your time in this beautiful country.

See you soon!

– Kerstin

Candidate Exposé – Roslyn Campbell

My name is Roslyn. I’m 23 years old and I’m from a small city in the heart of Scotland. I graduated from Abertay University in 2017, just before I went to Vancouver. I studied Media, Culture and Society there, a course that looks at analyzing the media and its relation to society.

Roslyn CampbellAfter visiting Vancouver in 2013 before I started university, I fell in love with this amazing, outdoor city. It had always been a dream of mine to come back. Since I wanted to expand my work experience after university, I thought this would be the perfect opportunity. In Canada, I did a volunteer program where I focused on sustainability and increasing the company’s social media presence. In order to be successful there, you need to have a strong sense of independence and be self-reliable. You also need to be a team player. I enjoyed my time there a lot.

Although I had been in Vancouver once before, my second impression was that the city was even more amazing than I remembered it. I stayed at a host family, which helped me feel at home. I also attended (almost) every pub night organized by INTERNeX and I joined many of their activities and trips. I went to Seattle, Whistler, Banff, Salt Spring Island, Bowen Island and many more beautiful places. I made a lot of friends through these events and my experience would not have been the same without them.

Roslyn Campbell (words)The nature is definitely one of the things I like most about Canada, together with White Rock, Salt Spring Island and the people. It is my goal to come back one day. However, I really want to visit other places such as Switzerland and the Scandinavian countries as well. My ultimate dream is to go on a safari and explore a rainforest in Africa. For now, I am back in Scotland, where the first thing I did was cuddle my dog, as I had not seen her in 6 months.

INTERNeX was very helpful regarding the preparation for the program, as well as providing me with advice about the city, what places to explore and introducing me to new friends. I have already recommended it to my friends! I miss Vancouver and am already thinking about when I can come back.

A good bye

That’s it. It started with a simple hello but now it ends with a complicated goodbye. What a great choice I made more than a year ago to come to Vancouver. The journey started in August when I arrived in this beautiful country. It seems like a couple of weeks ago, I can’t believe it is already over. Time flies by when you are having fun. I had definitely the time of my life. That’s why I am not sad because I am leaving, but I smile because it happened. I am very thankful for the great people I could experience this adventure with. Without them it wouldn’t be the same. Now it’s already time to look back at my time in Canada. And I can tell you, it was a good one.

eerste

Thanks to INTERNeX I could already spent my first weekend in the Rocky Mountains. I met such wonderful people and many friendships were made. I knew it would be beautiful, but I never expected to see such views. Wauw! The parties, campfires, the BEAUTIFUL sunset and the swims made this trip complete. After the trip I realized Canada was not my destination, but it was just the beginning of my journey.

vierde

Besides the Rockies I did many other trips and discovered a lot of new places I never heard of before. Whistler, where I did my first bungee jump ever. Victoria, where we drove on scooters to the top of the island. Seattle, where I saw its underground world and tasted the gum wall. Christmas in the Rocky Mountains. Kelowna, where we could snowboard in the sun with blue skies. And Salt Spring Island, where we partied the weekend away in our own villa. On all these trips I made so many good memories I will never forget.

The question for the upcoming Wednesdays will be: What should I do? I will definitely miss the great evenings we had every week at PuB NiGHTs. Of course the fun stories and the laughs, but what I will miss the most is the karaoke bar. I don’t know when it started, but ‘Bart’s surprise act’ was becoming a thing. You didn’t think I choose to sing Scatman, the guacamole song and Celine Dion myself, did you?

I am very happy I could work for a company like INTERNeX. Besides all the fun we had in the office, they always supported and helped me. I’ve learned a lot and my network is way bigger than 7 months ago. The best part of the job was not the part where you organize these activities, but the faces and grateful responses you get back. These activities were not so great because of the things we did, but because of the people you did those things with.derde

And now the time has come to say goodbye and go back to the Netherlands. I am looking forward to see my family and friends again after such a long time. But that would also mean I have to say bye to the friends (that also became family) I met here. Luckily, I don’t have to say goodbye to everyone, a simple ‘see you later’ is enough for now. Thanks to everybody who made this adventure as good as it was, Tim, Simon, the PR-guys, candidates and friends. I am very lucky I got to know people to who saying goodbye to now is so hard. I will miss all of you and I promise I will remember all the fun things we did here together. See you somewhere else in the world!

“See you later” – Danielle

How lucky am I to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.”

After being a PR coordinator for INTERNeX for the last 7 months the time has come to say bye and go back home. It’s a really weird feeling having to say bye to something that I wish would never end, but knowing the time has come to go back to ‘normal’.

18446536_1752755148073262_5088411146495132434_nI remember being at the airport in Amsterdam about 7 months ago and being both sad and excited to leave my safe, familiar life behind. I could have never hoped that my time here was going to be as amazing as it has and I can say without a doubt that coming to Vancouver was the best decision I ever made.

19247743_1814564715225638_4189782935234390938_nDuring my time as a PR coordinator at INTERNeX I got the opportunity to organize PuB NiGHTs, weekly events and monthly trips for our candidates. Thanks to that I have had the opportunity to do and see so many amazing things. I went bungee jumping in Whistler, skiing in Kelowna and experienced the most beautiful scenery of my life in the Rockies. Besides all these amazing trips we went out every week to discover something in Vancouver. There was never a dull moment and I enjoyed every single one of them.

But what made these trips and events great is not the activities we did or places we visited, it was all because of the people I got to do them with. I was lucky enough to find a group of friends here who were there through the many highs we had, but also some lows that come with it. Trips, events, activities and beautiful scenery mean so little when you have no one to share these memories with. When I look back on all the amazing things we did I do remember the beautiful views, but what makes that memory great is seeing Janel fall in a meter of snow. It makes me smile because I think about how funny it was to teach Zack how to ski. I think about Lara sharing stories about her family and Kerstin pep talking me up a mountain. I see Sarah pretending to model in the strip club we accidently ended up in and all of us laughing so hard we almost peed our pants.

20479879_1846846535330789_2953042477338405446_n

The hardest part of leaving is knowing that even if you came back eventually, it will never be the same as it is right now. But this is not going to be a goodbye, this is going to be a see you later. I know for sure that I will see all of them again. Some are easier to visit than other, but these friends have made Vancouver my home away from home and that’s something that I will never forget.

Besides my group of friends I also had the pleasure of meeting all of our candidates. I met so many of you and unfortunately also had to say bye to a lot of you already. But I still want to have the chance to say thank you. At INTERNeX we do our very best to organize stuff that will make your stay here as memorable as it could possibly be, but without your attendance, attitudes and energy it would have never been as good as it was. We might organize it for you guys, but you are all the reason it was so much fun.

17760044_1698133733535404_3937643539593595614_n

Doing my placement at INTERNeX has opened so many doors and has given me so many great things to look back on that, if I could go back, I would definitely choose the very same thing. They have always supported my goals and they have taught me so much about PR, marketing and project management. INTERNeX is an amazing company and I will be forever grateful for their guidance through this crazy experience.

This is not a goodbye but a see you later. I hope that I get to meet all of you somewhere in the world again. Thank you for an amazing 7 months.
