How was your Weekend?

The last full week before Christmas has started, so lets get it on. This is also the last official week, where Christmas music in the office is .. let’s say ,tolerated’. So go out and enjoy .. at last this is what will be doing!218cb3f5-0379-4f48-b44f-4828dfe17b5e.JPG

The weekend has been very active. Saturday morning the INTERNeX crew gathered in downtown for a very adventurous trip to the mountains. And by ‘in the morning’ I basically mean in the middle of the night, as it was still dark outside and not even coffee was working effectively against the jawning. Besides that it must have been very entertaining for outsiders to see us struggling with the heavy equipment making our way through downtown. Eventually we actually made it to the bus and headed towards Grouse Mountain.  The gondola took us all the way up the mountain and the first snow was to be seen. Some of us, maybe especially the Australian, bursted out in excitement by seeing the beautiful white wonderland. Apparently snow isn’t so common in down under ;-). Some of us decided it would be a better idea to rent out the equipment up the mountain, therefore the first stop has been the rental store. e9d56cc6-1562-4e4a-9770-2d28782ed431.JPGThose who rented there stuff in downtown waited outside, and decided to prepare for a little snowball attack to give the other ones a warm welcome as soon as they’d leave the rental store. Yes we know, this is incredibly grown up … :-D. As the waiting time turned out to be a lot longer than we expected, we ended up firing all the ammunition on each other. Of course we had enough time to even prepare a second round for the ones inside, which they clearly
551c1ff2-7294-4a7c-b782-a4d897f9a0da.JPGappreciated… not ;-D.
Anyways we finally managed to get up the mountain, put on those skies and/or snowboards and more or less successfully went down the slopes. For lunch we treated ourselves with pizza and some other semi-healthy snacks and cool beer and ciders before we went back out in the snow. Also discovering the fact that snowboards are the perfect toboggans, was a lot of fun and apparently a pretty good way to get down a slope if you are struggling to do it the recommended way, with your feet on the board. We also discovered that exactly that is apparently undesirable … spoilsports! 2e84eeaa-bb73-4cd4-b21a-763c24ee89a9.JPG

After this very long and exhausting day we got into the shuttle back to downtown. What a fantastic day. I cannot wait to go again.

Sunday I went on a little hike to the Quarry Rock and we actually enjoyed a stunning view from up there. As it was raining in North Vancouver and the sun shining in Vancouver, the sky looked breathtaking. So in case you haven’t been there – this is definelty a place to see! IMG_5034.JPG

So far so good.

I hope you already bought your Secret Santa.
In case you don’t really know what a secret Santa is and it will be working, check out the blog tomorrow as an explanation will follow.

Have a fantastic start into the new week!

Cheers,

What to do on the Weekend?

Another Friday has come around and I would love to let you know the exciting things we have happening here at INTERNeX.

As you might have seen on our Facebook page that the weather wasn’t really in our hands this week so we have had to have a few changes but don’t worry!! Ice Skating on Robson – Square will be happening on Sunday, another great way to enjoy winter in Vancouver. Saturday predicts some showers but Sunday looks like it may just be overcast (what more to expect from winter in the beautiful Canada ahah).

For those looking forward to Skiing, it has been rescheduled to 14th of December.

As one of my first weekend events I’m very excited to spend it Ice Skating with the christmasy atmosphere of beautiful Vancouver. In Australia it is about 31 degrees at the moment and yes, we do spend out Christmas day in our bikinis. This is my second Christmas in the winter and I love it. I hope you all share the same excitement as me and will hold my hand as we have a romantic time trying not to fall over.

However that’s not all that happening for me over the weekend, I will be checking out the Christmas markets if you would also like to check them out they are open from 11:30AM to 9:30PM so I will most likely be filling up on egg nog (a new discovery of mine that I have fallen in love with). A bit of history around it, its the 10th annual authentic German-inspired Christmas Markets where there will be traditional food and beverages, live entertainment and the opportunity to ride downtown Vancouver’s only Christmas Carousel. Don’t forget to buy your tickets online (adult is $12.99, Youth is $6.99).

If you are looking for a bit more of a romantic evening then I would suggest Stanley park, since Bright Nights has been available for the public. If you love Christmas lights then you will not be disappointed if you go.

Wishing you all the best for the weekend and make the most of it 🙂

xoxo

Fun Fact Friday

Every month, it is our task to brighten you with our knowledge about Vancouver. But, since we’ve done that a few times already, I was thinking that today I could tell you some facts about Canada itself instead. And not just any facts…

1. Gravity

7510359934_4d45336b93_nIn the 1960s, it was discovered that gravity in Hudson Bay and surrounding areas is lower than in the rest of the world. How? Well, it is pretty complicated, so pay close attention. One theory involves convection in the Earth’s mantle. A complex sentence, I know. So let’s break it down. First of all, it is important to know what convection is. Convection means “the transfer of heat through a liquid or gas, caused by molecular motion.” Secondly, the Earth’s mantle consists of magma. Magma is a hot, molten rock that is always moving in order to create convection currents. Convection brings the Earth’s continental plates down, which means the mass in that area gets smaller and therefore, there is a reduction in gravity. Considering this paragraph is basically a brainteaser that contains a lot of complicated science words, I will spare you the second theory.

2. Education

You might not have guessed it, but Canada is the number one most educated country in the world. According to a study done by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, more than 56 per cent of residents between 25 and 64 years old have a college degree. Back in 2000, this was only 40 per cent. Despite the number not being crazy high, Canada is doing a much better job than most countries. The United States, ironically, ranked sixth place in the list of “the 10 most educated countries in the world” created by the OECD. With Japan being second place with 50.5 per cent, Canada and Japan are the only countries who have surpassed the 50 per cent mark.

3. North Pole in Canada

23427910665_69436eda11_nIt might not be Christmas just yet, but that doesn’t mean we can’t talk about it! In fact, Canada has such a great fact related to Christmas, that I just HAVE to tell you all about it. In Canada, you have the opportunity to send a letter to Santa Claus. There is an actual postal address you can send your letter to and as long as you include a return address, Santa will read the letter and send one back to you! Santa and his elves make sure every single letter is personal and exciting. Don’t worry; you don’t have to be a kid to participate! You just have to believe in Santa and the magic of Christmas.

In case this inspired you to write a letter to Santa too, the address is:
Santa Claus
North Pole
Canada
HOH OHO

Have a great weekend everyone! See you on Sunday when we do our hike!

Winter in the Rockies: Part 1

I’ve had the time of my life and I never felt like this before, yes I swear it’s the truth and I owe it all to YOU!

Time flies when you’re having fun! The Rockies trip we were so excited about has already ended… Sad. But what a great weekend we had! We knew it was going to be impressive, but the real life experience exceeded my (high) expectations. There is so much to talk about, but let’s start at the beginning…

41175779622_efacb8c211_nWe all met at the bus at 7am to mark the start of our adventure. It was early, but luckily the long bus ride made sure we could all catch up on some sleep. Our first stop was Hope, where we could admire wooden sculptures of bears and a beautiful rainbow. Next stop: Kamloops. Lunchtime! Back on the bus, we played the ‘Moose or Beaver’ game, where everyone had to choose whether the loony (another word for a Canadian dollar) that Erin, our fantastic tour guide, flipped would land on the loon bird or the queen. Everyone looked hilarious, but we were all in this together. Right before we arrived at the hotel in Valemount, we went to visit Rearguard Falls Provincial Park. The entire park was covered in snow, which was breathtaking. Then we checked into the hotel, had dinner at a nearby restaurant and to end this busy day of traveling, we had a little party in our room.

41175778762_61b8a9a589_n

Saturday: 7:45AM. Time to get on the bus again! We started the day with a stop at Mount Robson. It was cold. Like, REALLY cold. But it was so worth it! We had the most beautiful view and there was not a single cloud in the sky, which is really unusual during this time of year. Then, it was time to warm up again and travel to our next stop: Jasper. Time to get some fresh air, get a coffee, get lunch, buy souvenirs and enjoy the view of the mountains.

Unfortunately, due to an avalanche, we had to take a detour and therefore we were not able to see all the things we had planned. Once we arrived at the hotel later in the evening, we wanted to get a drink and have dinner at the pub. Long story short: We did not have dinner and the only thing saving many candidates from starving was the vending machine. It was a long day, but in the end, we still had fun and we knew Sunday would make up for it!

Curious about the last two days of the trip? Come back tomorrow to read Nadine’s post!

See you all at PuB NiGHT at The Beaver Bar tonight! (Mmm, K!)

How was your weekend?

My weekend? Great. Active. Short. Sunny. Full of snow.

As all of you surely know, last Thursday was the National Margarita Day. Of course, we had to celebrate this important event. Therefore, we went to “La Casita” on Friday, a Spanish restaurant in Gastown, where you can get a huge margarita (so big that you can easily share it with two or three people) in different flavours for only $24.

Saturday was a perfect winter day: sun and snow in whole Vancouver. Great conditions for a hike! The destination this time was the Norvan Falls in the Lynn Headwaters Regional Park. The whole park was covered in a thick layer of fluffy snow. We hiked forhike 2 week5.jpg about five hours along a river and up the mountains, always surrounded by beautiful scenery. Since the sun was up and started melting the snow, the hike became a game whenever a little snow avalanche fell down from the trees. When does it come down? Who’s head is getting hit next? But we managed all slippery stairs and other obstacles successfully. After a quick stop at home to get some dry clothes and a hot shower, it was already time to leave again.

Many familiar faces found their way to the escape room. My team and I gave the best to solve all the tricky riddles to escape from the zombie apocalypse. Unfortunately, time was running out, so we could not open the door ourselves. To calm down from all the stress, we headed off to Malone’s for a beer or two. The final stop of the night was the Roxy.

Only a few hours later, my alarm went off again. I jumped in my ski pants and headed out to the science world skytrain station where already some people were waiting with their skies on their shoulders. It looked funny since there was almost no snow anymore cypress week 5in downtown. The bus took us to Cypress Mountain, one of the local mountains of Vancouver. After a few minutes of skiing in the clouds, the sun started to shine. The weather changed so quickly up there, it was crazy! While skiing and snowboarding, we had a stunning view over Vancouver and surrounding from the top. The day passed by quickly, so it was already dark when we returned our rentals and stepped back in the bus. Enjoying a full day on the slopes on a casual Sunday is definitely something I can get used to!

So I am starting off this week with sore muscles, but great memories. I hope that you also had a great weekend. Time to make plans for the upcoming ones during our PuB NiGHT at The Beaver Bar on Wednesday.

 See you there!
