New ‘Kids’ on the Blog

Half the week is already over and once again it’s finally the day of Pub-Night.
And Wednesday, also means you get to meet the new INTERNeXer, that joined us at the beginning of this week.

And this week you might have to take some notes, as we got 5(!!!) new people joining.
Therefore lets not loose anymore time and let’s talk about our Newbies! As a group, I would like to refer to them as “the Islanders” (I’ll explain that later on).

The bright smiling sunshine on the right hand side, is called Anton. Anton is 19 years old and from Germany. He actually made a very brave step moving from a small village to our beautiful Vancouver, intending to find out if he is made for the city life. And yes, some of you be like “Vancouver isn’t even that big”. But as a person moving here from a small village myself, I absolutely get it. And I think it is quite a decision to make. So welcome from one ‘villager’ to another. I hope you will have a wonderful time here and you will hopefully fall in love with the city, as fast as we did.

Moving on to Maria. With her sweet 18 years, she is the youngest one out of the Islanders. Luckily, tonight, your age won’t stop you from meeting the INTERNeXer, as the Two Parrots welcome minors as well. Maria was looking for an english speaking country to improve her language skills. Because of a family recommendation she decided to come to Vancouver and from here, this lady is ready to go on some adventures, like traveling to Seattle and doing Bungee Jumping (soo cool!).

Next one in line is Lina. She has been dreaming of this for such a long time. But because of university and life always getting in her way, she wasn’t able to do it earlier than now. But hey, I am actually very glad it worked out this exact way. Otherwise we might have never met you, so let’s call it faith. Plus she got to finish her masters in psychology, which is (just after meeting us) also a pretty good turnout :P. She also mentioned, that she is here to meet new people and is open to new experiences – well Lina, it seems like you are a perfect fit to our group then :).

The young men on her left hand side is Felix and yes you might have guessed it – he is also from Germany. And I get the feeling, that we can learn a lot from this one, as he proved to have a very creative mindset! The reason why Felix is here, is everything but one of the regular stories you get to hear.
As we all have had a job interview before, we know the struggle that comes with it.  Technically it’s all about presenting your best possible self and Felix here, is clearly a master in that! As he got asked why is only applying for the job in 2020 and not 2019, he clearly couldn’t admit that he might have missed the time slot for it. So mentioning a planned gap-year seemed like the perfect excuse instead. And once it was said, he was being a men of his word, got in a plane and now joined the INTERNeX gang for a practicum! Felix is very interested in sports and can’t wait to see the Super Bowl. I promise you, you will meet our enthusiasts tonight, that will be very happy to watch it with you!
Last but not least is Theresa. Guess where she is from? … Ha, got ya – she is from Austria. Anyways Theresa here also just graduated and is now gaining some practical experiences here in beautiful British Columbia. Theresa didn’t really feel like working yet, so she said goodbye to her previous job and to Austria, packed her bag and made her way across the ocean to have an incredible time here. And fun fact, I think she has the coolest voice ever! I am sorry, for pointing that out like this, but I love it!

Anyways as we where sitting together getting to know each other, it turned out all of these guys have Vancouver Island on their bucket list. As this is a classic, please pass on helpful tipps and tricks as you have already been there or simply sign up to the adventure-bus of the ‘islanders’ to see Vancouver Island together with them.
However now that the snow is gone, there won’t be anything getting in the way to get together at tonights Pub-Night at the Two Parrots.
To the Newbies: don’t be shy, everybody is already very excited to meet you!
Have a wonderful day/night.
See you soon,
Cheers,
— Nadja xx

INTERNeX Canada: Casual Friday

Since I started my internship here at INTERNeX Canada couple weeks back, I began to think how different life is when working full time and not going to school. I’ve always been a student. Sure I’ve worked a few part time jobs here and there, but never actually taken the step to stop attending classes for a whole semester to work. Many of you might be already used to this kind of feeling…how shall I put it, a sense of independence? And I don’t mean the kind of independence you get in college where teachers no longer follow you around if you haven’t done your homework.

But for me, it was definitely strange at first.  I’ve never lived alone in a different country and I still live with my parents. So being here at INTERNeX and meeting people around my age (even younger) who have all traveled here to work alone, made me think how inexperienced I still am. I have so much more to learn, as a person, and to see in life.

I don’t believe I’m the only one who has felt this way before -a bit scared, a little overwhelmed, but completely excited to experience new things…sort of like when a kid is left at a candy store all alone. Okay I admit that was a pretty bad analogy.

So I’ll just end this with the words of John Maxwell (that pretty much sums up how I feel), “If we’re growing, we’re always going to be out of our comfort zone“.

Hope you guys have a great weekend 🙂

Cheers,

Flora

INTERNeX Canada: Expose of the week with Bettina

Today’s expose of the week is with Bettina. She is from Germany and came to Canada because she always wanted to know more about the culture, work, food and of course the nature Vancouver is surrounded with. Bettina is going to be here in Canada until the beginning of May, which is a good thing because she will do her thesis here about Canadian stereotypes.

  • What kind of internship are you doing?

I am doing an internship at a non-profit organization. This organization helps people find work, create new own business and does Green renovations.  At this company I am the “everything girl”; which means public relations, marketing and promotion trough flyers, brochures and writing articles.

  • Is your internship useful?

Yes, my internship is definitely useful, because the company shows me so much support, trust and always provides something new and challenging. They really integrate me into the team are patient and helping me develop myself.

  • What kind of tasks are you responsible for on daily basis?

I am writing articles, e-mails to clients, testimonials and make brochures, storybooks as well as work process.

  • What is the best thing about your internship?

The event I had last week. The event was a talk show where three social enterprises presented their companies. The speech that my company did was really inspiring and I learned a lot about it.

  • What do you like most about Canada and Vancouver?

I like everything about Vancouver so far, when I go to work I see the mountains and the harbor as well as the culture of the people I meets and the atmosphere everywhere.

  • What trips do you do in your free time, also organized by INTERNeX?

I am saving money to travel after het internship. However I am planning to go and see the park in Vancouver and different other places.

  •  Why did you choose INTERNeX International Exchange?

I was looking online for an internship and the website from INTERNeX was clear and the programs really appealed to me. I contacted INTERNeX and everything from communication to the internship position is really good “I just liked it”.

  •  What’s the best thing about INTERNeX International Exchange?

I think that the best thing is that they connect people; they have good communication as well as offer adventures in foreign countries.

  •  How did you find a place to stay?

INTERNeX offered me to stay with a home stay family or at the Staffhouse. I already stayed with a home stay family in England and wanted to see how life is in a student house. I really like the Staffhouse and have met really nice people there, especially her roommate.

  •  How did INTERNeX International Exchange help you organize your trip to Canada?

INTERNeX helped me with making arrangement for my trip to Canada and they where really patient with me and they answered all my questions.

  •  Would you recommend INTERNeX International Exchange?

Yes, I would because this is a great opportunity to meet people from all over the world and to do international work experience.

Thank you Bettina of sharing your experiences with us.

I wish you best of luck with finishing your thesis and hope that you have an amazing time here in Vancouver.

Greetings,

Petra
